The Knysna 440 catamaran is designed by renowned naval architect Angelo Lavranos. It is fast with modern prismatic hulls, power generating wide beam and the highest quality finishes, fittings and workmanship.  This catamaran has a stable configuration, excellent handling ability and Airex foam core vacuum bag construction. SV Lauren Grace was built in a modern facility using state of the art materials and workmanship.  All Knysna yachts are designed to cross oceans in safety and comfort.

‘Lauren Grace’ is a one-owner, immaculately presented cruising catamaran designed and built to the highest standards in South Africa, close to the Leopard Catamaran’s factory and with similar criteria in mind with regards to ensuring maximum safety and seaworthiness in the challenging Southern Ocean. 

Unlike many production yachts, the Knysna is not mass produced, but built by a boutique-style company which puts high value in one-on-one customer satisfaction and meets the most stringent criteria. This philosophy is obvious when stepping on board ‘Lauren Grace’ , which was clearly built with strength, durability and attention to detail in mind. The Knysna Yacht Company is based in Knysna, (the K is silent), famed for the dangerous entrance to the Lagoon known as the Knysna Heads, and being situated on the East Coast of South Africa on the Indian Ocean; our yachts are tried and tested in some of the world’s most challenging sea conditions.

Purchased for these very reasons by their American owners when just launched, she was subsequently sailed around the world for the next few years, during which time she proved herself time and again to be beyond expectations. Light, fast and set-up as a spacious live-aboard, she is a lovely and bright home at rest, and a sensational cruising catamaran at play. Built quite low, with high bows and extended transoms, her design maximizes adherence to the water and minimizes wind tunnelling, while remaining comfortable in large seas. Her turn of speed and higher pointing to the wind is surprisingly good for a cruising catamaran without daggerboards. 

Launched via her elegant transoms, ‘Lauren Grace’s first feature is her teak cross-running transom, which is fitted with snap shackles and where the dinghy can easily be launched and retrieved. There is a solid outboard bracket designed to accommodate a large outboard in upright position when on passage. 

Stepping into the cockpit, the area is safely separated from the transoms, and built in a way to maximize seating area without impeding on the traffic to and from the deck and steering. A large table becomes unobtrusive when folded but once opened can accommodate 6-8 people comfortably. The cockpit is covered by a solid Bimini, which is built of GRP Airex foam core, which despite being very light is strong enough for any adult to walk on. Several steps built into the forefront of the coach roof allows easy access to the Bimini top, which makes reaching the sail bag and lazy jacks if needed simple and safe. The cockpit is enclosable by custom-made clears that can be rolled up or removed when not needed. The Bimini is also designed to catch rain water with a cleverly designed catchment system.

Up a step is the steering station, which offers outstanding visibility on all corners of the boat, which is often inadequate on catamarans. All instruments, controls and sheets are within easy access, and the angle of the radar display which is installed inside can be seen from this station. 

The saloon is accessed through a large sliding glass door. It is large, bright and intelligently laid-out, with a triangular shape saloon to one side and a large navigation table on the other. The panoramic view over the water from the large windows is outstanding. The galley is down two steps to provide a huge working area while remaining on an open split-level to the saloon, so that guests and cook can communicate.  The galley being designed this way also means that almost one entire third of the port hull is devoted to food preparation and storage, which is often lacking on boats of all size. Everything is spotless and well organised.

Moving forward is the master stateroom, with a queen size berth, lockers, vanity, mirror, and plenty of natural light through the large overhead hatches. There is a huge amount of storage available beneath the bed, the upholstered bench / step at the foot of the bed, and in various lockers and wardrobes, All the cabins are bright and airy, freshly painted and very welcoming. 

The master ensuite is huge, and includes a bathtub with overhead shower, wash basin and cupboard. The head area is well lit by an overhead hatch and the escape hatch on the inner side of the hull.

Aft is another large double cabin fitted with a queen size berth and many storage lockers. This cabin, as the similar aft cabin in the other hull, is mostly used for storage at present but is equipped with a comfortable double mattress.

Mirroring the port side of the boat, the starboard side is similarly configured, with the large bathroom forward (without the bathtub), another toilet, and two queen size cabins with ample storage. The passageway is an ideal area to store books and manuals, as well as tools, parts and equipment. It would also make an excellent home office. As with the rest of the boat, everything is tidily organised and immaculately clean. Access to the engines, which are freee of corrosion and spotless, as is the engine bay, is below the aft cabin berths. The area is wide enough for an adult to easily access all parts of the engine for servicing.

Moving back on deck, which is easily accessed and safe to manoeuvre in all weather with good non-skid and higher than normal lifelines, the impression of space is breathtaking. One can easily forget that the boat is only 44’ long, the amount of usable space is simply amazing. 

The sharp, elegant bows are reinforced for structural stiffness, especially desirable in the punishing Southern Ocean, and stiffness is over-engineered for the Southern Ocean with a massive cross-deck section and longitudinal double beam spreading from mid-ships to the bow and separating the two trampolines. This is a feature, which many catamaran owners which design does not include this additional reinforcement, often chose to have custom-made. The added benefit is the extra support to the anchor chain all the way to the double roller, and to accommodate a stronger platform for the forestay and articulated bowsprit which is used for screecher sail (asymmetrical spinnaker), which is kept lifted when not in use.

‘Lauren Grace’ is freshly painted, and her hull, topside and decks are in really beautiful condition.  She has been the home of her owners since launched, and has been lavished at all time the respect and attention one can expect from cruising owners, who devote themselves to full time caring for their beloved boat, unlike boats normally sitting in marinas between long period of disuse. She is ready to be passed on to her new family in outstanding condition, and with the benefits of her current owners’ gentle counsel should you wish for a little guidance to smooth the transition to life aboard, whether you would prefer to remain exploring the 300 paradise islands of Fiji (the boat is imported and can remain here indefinitely), or if you would like to get ready to continue sailing around the world. 

For someone thinking of investing in a lifestyle with an additional source of income in Fiji, ‘Lauren Grace’ would also be a very good option to operate as a charter vessel, as she offers many characteristics suitable for the charter industry.

Berths/heads: 4 queen size berths, with 2 heads/showers. Additional shower on deck. 

Galley:Ergonomically designed, located in port hull, new 3 burner gas stove, side opening 12v refrigeration at counter height.  12v Freezer, double fiberglass sinks, under counter lighting and ample storage throughout. Galley is open to the salon so crew can still remain in the conversation. 

Salon:  Spacious with ample seating, open to galley down, large table for charting a course.  Generous navigation station with full instrumentation at a glance.

Sails inventory: Roller furling genoa in new condition. New screecher sail on roller furling mounted on bowsprit.  Main sail original but still in good condition and all sails ready to use. Stored in stack pack configuration.  Mast and spars by Sparcraft, South Africa. 

Standing rigging: New stainless steel standing wire rigging throughout in 2016.

Engines:Two Yanmar naturally aspirated diesel engines, model 3GM30 (27 hp).  Engines have 3,873 hrs (port) and 3,889 hrs (stb).  SD20 sail drives.  Motors/sail drives in excellent condition. Numerous engine spares. 

Electronics:  Furuno 24 mile radar, Garmin 70S 7” chart plotter with full charts of Fiji, NZ, eastern Australia, and other Pacific Island groups, Icom VHF, Icom SSB/Ham radio.  AM/FM radio. Raymarine auto-pilot.  Link 2000 charger/inverter.  Wind speed indicator at helm is not working at present. All other electronics working properly. 

Solar:6 solar panels on bimini roof for a total 570 watts easily keep the AGM batteries at peak charge. 50  amp heavy duty Blue Sky solar regulator.

Wind Gen: Aero 6 Gen, recently rebuilt and working efficiently and quietly. 

Batteries: 7X110 Amp AGM batteries, new July 2016

Water tankage: 2X200 liter fiberglass tanks pool coated for better taste.

Fuel tankage: 2X600 liter fiberglass tanks. Fuel kept clean.

Rain Catcher: permanent rain catcher on bimini top. 

Deck:Wide flat decks for ease of deck work and relaxing when on anchor. 

Anchors/anchor windlass: Lofrans 1200 rope/chain anchor windlass, 100 meters grade 4 chain with Delta 55 lb anchor, 45 lb CQR, and Fortress 23 alloy Danforth designed anchor. Ample gear to set all anchors. 

Nav-Station:  This space is ergonomically designed and spacious allowing for proper control and observation of important electronic information.  Large windows allow you to keep a panoramic eye on all horizons and deck activities. 

Helm;Fully equipped allowing full view of the entire deck and sea conditions while protecting the helmsman in comfortable seating. 

Bottom paint: Haul-out conducted in May of 2018 replacing sail-drive zincs and 3 coats of Resene AF4000 semi-hard antifoul paint.  

Dinghy: Caribe 11.2 ft (3.8 mtr), 15hp two stroke Yamaha outboard. Excellent working order.

Inverter/charger: Link 2000, 110/220 shore power connection. 

Appliances: Refrigerator and separate freezer are 12 volt, 3 burner LP gas stove (2 years old, SMEV brand).

Cockpit/helm station: Spacious and comfortable, fully enclosable with recent new clears in side and back curtains.  Center table for storage and entertaining.  

Back Deck/Dive Platform: Spacious and convenient large back steps and dive platform for diving and swimming or just relaxing with a fresh water shower close at hand.

Cockpit has a hard bimini with a rain catcher. New bottom paint/zincs May of 2018. House/start batteries replaced with 7-110 amp AGM batteries 2016. New standing rigging 2016. All equipment in good working order except for wind speed indicator.
