Renowned as one of the most perfect cruising yacht ever created, the Amel Maramu and her big sister the Supermaramu have all the features that one could possibly wish for to explore the most remote corners of the world in safety and comfort.
Safety and the ability to be operated by one person is one of Amel's top priorities. To make things even easier, "Chara” is ketch rigged with electric furling on the main, mizzen and jib. The boat is fitted with a hard dodger offering a well-protected comfortable cockpit for offshore cruising.
With a short draft for a boat of this size at only 6'5", she is ideal for tidal areas or for sailing amongst reefs, while her keel is still substantial enough to give her very good tracking ability and pointing remarkably high when sailing upwind.
The Amel is one of the only yachts that doesn't misbehave when going straight down-wind, and to add further power when following the trade winds to your next destination, Amel yachts have developed the unique double pole-out system which is easily snapped onto the two forward sails to benefit from a well-balanced, 'goose-wing' sail configuration that acts like a powerful team of horses.
The centre cockpit provides a well-protected area with a large amount of space to relax, dine and to keep the skipper company underway. It is fitted with removable clears and sunshades to cater for all sort of weather. ‘Chara’s current owners began their cruising in the high latitudes and needed a warm, safe cockpit that could also adapt to warm climates.
The well-positioned steering area offers good visibility and with its specifically designed seat will prevent the skipper from sliding around or having to find somewhere to brace himself in heavy weather.
All the lines and sheets are run to the cockpit for convenience and safety, using the Amel developed, unique features that make these yachts so popular to single-handed or short-handed sailors.
Inside, the Amel’s magnificent skills and attention to detail are visible everywhere. The timberwork and joinery is exquisite. The wide-open salon centres around a versatile table with wings on either side that can be lifted to accommodate more guests, each side seating 4-5 people comfortably. Storage is exceptional throughout and will easily rival a 60’ cruising yacht. The 2-cabins / 2-bathroom layout is perfect to give the owners plenty of privacy and for their guests to also have a little ‘apartment’ of their own forward, with a door separating their cabin, wardrobe and head area from the rest of the boat.
A very large quarter berth in the salon has a swing-out backrest that is hinged in a way to become a comfortable lee-sheet, making this berth an ideal spot to rest between watches at sea.
The galley is very large and designed in a way to be safe to use in all conditions. As with the rest of the boat, storage is abundant and well-thought of , so to have room for everything you need on a long voyage without cluttering the boat.
The aft cabin is exceptionally large for a boat of this size, with a proper queen size berth, huge amount of storage, very good headroom and it’s own access to the ensuite head / shower area.
‘Chara’ is faultlessly presented and a credit of her owners of many years. She presents in absolutely beautiful condition and is equipped to suit blue-water cruising in comfort and safety. She is immensely strong, powerful, manoeuvrable, and to make you feel even safer, fitted with two water-tight bulkhead in the event of a collision.
She is regrettably offered for sale and presented in beautiful condition, ready to continue sailing around the world.

Chara is a 1985 Amel Maramu. She was built in La Rochelle France to a design by H. Amel and J. Careau. The Amel is designed as a blue water cruiser but is also quite comfortable at anchorage. She is approximately 48 feet long with a beam of 13 feet one inch and a draft of 6 ½ feet. She has a 75hp Yanmar diesel which will propel her comfortable at 7.5kts. Her tankage supplies 1000l of water and 450l of Diesel fuel. Each head has a holding water tank for use in anchorages or at the dock.
The Maramu is a center cockpit aft cabin ketch design. The forward v-birth can be closed off with a water tight bulkhead to form a guest cabin with an ensuite toilet/shower. This suite has a hanging locker and abundant storage overhead and below the beds. There is an overhead hatch, as well as a fan for ventilation.
Moving aft you will find the main salon, nav station and galley. The dining table seats up to 8 persons. There is sleeping accommodations for 3 adults.
The Gallery has a 2 burner Force 10 stove with oven/broiler. There is a 4.2 cuft refrigerator as well as a separate freezer. There is a double galley sink with storage above.
The Salon floor has 10 removable covers for dry storage.
The companion way into the aft cabin holds the diesel fuel tank with storage on top.
Like the v-birth, the aft cabin closes off to provide privacy when guests are of board and also is furnished with its own head/shower.

TENDER AND OUTBOARD:
All Amels, since 1967, have been built with Amel designed biaxial fiberglass cloth. This is a flat woven fiberglass cloth that is much stronger in sheer and tension than conventional mat and woven roving laminates.
The hull is molded in one piece incorporating one piece/non-spliced lengths of biaxial cloth running from bulwark, down through the keel/centerline, and up to the opposite bulwark. In the same fashion the next series of laminates run from the bow lengthwise to the stern, again, employing one piece/non-spliced length of biaxial cloth.
The deck assembly is built in a similar fashion. While the hull is a sold fiberglass laminate with no core, the deck assembly employs a core of vertical end grain balsa in strategic horizontal areas to enhance stiffness and is insulation from heat and noise. There are also substrates of "Iron Wood" in the deck assembly where cleats and the windlass are installed to easily accommodate the increased compression and shearing loads in the foredeck.
After all the structural assemblies are completely installed, the separately completed deck assembly is joined to the hull, (again, while it is still in the mold) with six layers of the same biaxial cloth used in the primary lamination, around the entire hull to deck interface. What is accomplished, effectively, is the elimination of a conventional hull to deck joint. The hull and deck are married with a homogeneous fiberglass matrix, which insures a strong and lee free hull and deck join for the entire life of the vessel.
All 1000 liters/264 gallons of fresh water are carried in the stub keel, not only providing a double bottom but keeping the weight of the water quite low in the boat and not in tanks under settees.
The propeller extends from a secondary fin aft of the keel and is a three blade type, offering great reduction in prop walk in forward and sternway.
The rudder is hung from a massive full-length skeg assembly that can support the entire stern laden weight of the vessel in case of grounding.
