INTRODUCTION: (In the owners' words)

"We bought this fantastic Moody 471 custom 3 years ago specifically for this adventure. We have sailed her from the UK to New Zealand over the last 16 months. It has been an amazing family adventure for us. We have sailed with our 2 children, 9 and 10 years old.

I wanted a Moody because it is a classic, go-anywhere, blue water yacht from the legendary designer Bill Dixon and was built by Britain’s leading yacht builder Moody’s. Bill Dixon designed it to do just what we have done, cruise over long distances with great confidence and comfort. The attention to detail and the engineering that went into these boats can-not be beaten.

Friends of mine had sailed round the world for 5 years in one and had a really fantastic experience - so I was on the lookout for this exact model of boat. It also has a very sea kindly motion which was important for my wife, Christina, who had not done much sailing and suffered from sea sickness on other boats but not this one.

We sailed it in the UK and around the English Channel to get to know her better. I have also sailed for many years professionally, teaching the Royal Yachting Association Yachtmaster Offshore courses as well as offshore racing around Europe. All my experience informed the extensive refit. The fundamentals of the boat design and build are perfect but before we left I wanted all the systems upgraded and modernized to the latest standards and performance. I wanted nothing given to chance for our family adventure.

I lived near the Moody yard and I spent a lot of time in the UK finding great people to help refit her to a very high standard over two years. I wanted to be absolutely sure we could sail safely and very comfortably long distances and get the performance out of the boat when we wanted it. Many of the people who worked on the boat were the original Moody craftsman (shipwrights, riggers, plumbers, engineers etc).

Sailing the Moody 471 with the Solent and Cutter rig is a real joy. She is a sailor’s boat in that respect. The rig and sails are set up for one person to easily handle all the sails with lines leading back to the cockpit (two genoas, code zero and mainsail on furlers). With two people it makes it incredibly easy.

When we are short tacking upwind we can either use the staysail in higher winds which makes it a very comfortable ride even on very windy days. Or we use the number 2 (135%) genoa which is set on a furler when we need more power in lighter winds. The cutter staysail is removable, unlike many cutter rigs. When you want the bigger number 2 genoa sail for more power this set up means that it tacks unobstructed by the cutter stay. We did a lot of upwind sailing in Europe so it was important to have good performance and options upwind.

However, the vast majority of our sailing in the last year has been down wind. The Solent rig is exceptional in this regard and she excels downwind. Off the wind, reaching, you can choose from either the Code Zero set on its own furler or the big 165% Genoa set on the forward furler (if the wind strength is higher).  For running downwind the two genoas are set on spinnaker poles (one person can easily rig the spinnaker poles). The wing-on-wing sailing is superb. The boat is perfectly balanced. It’s fast, easy to set-up, extremely easy to handle: the same sail combination and set up can take you from under 10 knots of wind to 50 knots. The stability and control you have does not change through the wind range. Importantly, there is not a need to leave the cockpit. It’s the safest and fastest downwind sailing you can do.

Under power, she displays none of the challenges many other ocean going boats have. She is easy to maneuver, turns in her own length and reverses in a straight line. For really tight berthing situations, there is a bow thruster. The powerful 82HP engine can keep her cruising at speed in all weathers and the Bruntons auto prop feathers automatically tuning itself to the engine speed to maximize fuel economy.

Her short keel has been a huge advantage for us, allowing us to navigate safely the Pacific reefs and shoals. We can get close in (to be really comfortable in anchorages), tucked away from the wind whilst other boats need to stay further out.

She is a centre cockpit boat which gives great security at sea. It also means that there is a good choice of spaces to socialize in. There are bimini covers and awnings that cover from the mast to the stern of the boat, giving protection against the sun and making it cozy & dry in the rainy Pacific weather conditions.

Down below she is spacious and has been ideal for a family and hosting friends. It’s easy to see where the Moody craftsmen got their reputation. No expense was spared when it came to the build quality and the attention to detail in these custom interiors is exceptional.

The main saloon is large, open and airy. The drop leaf table (with a leaf on port and starboard) means the space is very flexible, you can use some or all the seating and host a lot of adults. 4-5 adults can sit each side (we’ve had 10 in comfort sitting round the table). The saloon seating can also convert into a day bed which the children have loved.

The Galley is bigger than you find on many boats. The features have been really well thought through to ensure it is safe and uncluttered. Everything is within reach. A big chest fridge (that can also keep items frozen in one corner) means you have everything you need to prepare extensive meals for a lot of people or just a cozy meal for two.

There are two sleeping cabins. The master or owners cabin is in the stern and as with all Moody’s it is a big cabin with a big bed. Lots of storage. It is a really nice space to retreat to and has an en-suite heads and shower. There is standing head room throughout the boat from the forward cabin and heads to the stern owner’s cabin.

The forward cabin is also en-suite and has 4 bunks. It makes it a very airy and light cabin that is flexible for having more guests.

The storage throughout is very well thought through. We have never had a problem stowing away the very large amount of kit we bought along for the family. We even accommodated a full size piano keyboard!

Sadly, we have reached the end of our journey. Our goal was to get to New Zealand. My work had given me an 18 month break to go on this amazing journey with my family. Now it’s time to go back and restart our lives and jobs in the U.K.

I hope that we can pass on Banyu Aman (which means water calmness or safetyin old Javanese), we have loved her very much. She is ready to sail away and continue the next blue water cruising adventure."

INTERIOR:

As with all Moody designs the interiors are built to a very high quality and the 471 Custom yachts had a special attention to its wooden detail.

She has a centre cockpit and a large, spacious aft cabin. The aft cabin has a very comfortable generous double bed. Fans and reading lights are fitted on both sides. There is ample storage with large hanging lockers, drawers, cupboards, shelves and stowage bins. There is a Lewmar lockable overhead hatch with fitted fly screens and UV resistant sun cap. The hatch also has an attractive security bars that are removable. This master or owners cabin is en-suite. It can be accessed via the Galley or via the nav station and heads. The heads can be locked so that it becomes exclusive to the master cabin or remains open as a second entry to the master cabin, giving the main saloon access to the bathroom and heads.

The forward cabin has its own en-suite heads and shower. It is an airy cabin with 4 large single bunks. Reading lights and fans are fitted above all bunks. There is a huge range of storage forward: hanging lockers, under bunk stowage, cabinets, drawers and abundant lockers. As with all storage on this Moody internal removable bars are fitted to ensure even when heeled over nothing moves in the lockers. There are two Lewmar hatches with fitted fly screens and UV resistant sun caps. Rain caps are also provided that enable the hatches to remain open at anchor even when it is raining. There are removable security bars in all the Lewmar hatches.

The main saloon is a very social area with a cozy atmosphere. Again storage is huge. Every nook and cranny has been thought about: from an ability to stow a full size piano keyboard to under the cabin floor lockable lockers, a variety of bookshelves, accessible lockers etc. There is also a concealed bilge mounted safe.

Dorade vents help ventilate the boat throughout. The boat has been designed to ensure that there is a continuous gentle breeze naturally blowing through the boat with dorados and external opening ports in the galley and heads specifically designed to facilitate the air flow. Alternatively there is also a Webasto hot heater system for the two bedrooms.

The Galley comes equipped with everything you need for extended cruising. A new ENO cooker, 3 burners, oven and grill. The gas system also has a remote safety gas solenoid operated valve. This system works with either Butane or Propane and come with a universal gas connector kit to ensure that no matter where you go the gas bottles will fit. There is also a new microwave.

There are twin sinks. New pressurized hot and cold water system, as well as new manual freshwater and salt water pumps. A new Seagull IV filter system ensures that not only does the water always taste great but it is safe - no matter where you fill. Water is never a problem as the water maker can easily keep pace with family needs. The galley fridge is a large chest fridge. It is a plate cooled system that is so efficient it can drop the temperature of the fridge to keep items frozen for days.

All lights throughout the boat have been changed to LED. There is a mixture of soft yellow lights or powerful spot lights in every cabin and area of the boat. Energy consumption can be kept to a minimum and just the right light can set the mood in each cabin. When required working powerful lights can also reach everywhere.

The navigation station is large with a full size chart table. There is plenty of storage and a comfortable captains swivel chair. Or a great homework station.

ELECTRICAL / POWER:

"The boat has been fitted with many different power options to make sure we never run short and we always have options. There is 12v and 240v fitted throughout."

There are twin alternators on the engine to charge the engine and house battery banks independently. They can be switched in case of failure (a spare alternator is also carried).

A new Panda Fischer 5000i Neo Diesel generator has been installed. This is the latest variable speed generator that is very fuel efficient, tailoring its speed to the charge required. It also has a Panda Fischer Super Silent exhaust fitted that makes it one of the quietest generators. Last major service August 2019.

In addition, there are free energy sources from the new Eclectic Energy D400 wind generator (with remote break). There is also 160W of solar panels. Many days, even with the family using all the power they need (which is often a lot!) we just rely on the wind and solar.

To contain all this power there are new AGM batteries split into 3 banks, 9 batteries and approximately 1000 amp hours.

All the power sources are managed by a new Mastervolt Mass Combi Ultra Inverter and Charger. This unit can intelligently charge the different battery banks providing different charging modes that optimize charging and maintain battery life.

There is also new wiring, new RCDs, new plugs, new grounds etc. The electrical system has been extensively upgraded in the refit.

To aid power consumption, all lights have been changed to LED with new navigation, deck lights, interior lights etc. You can decide to be powerfully lit or have more subtle softer mood lighting.

It has the power to keep you motoring in even adverse conditions but equally can be used for longer periods at lower revs with great fuel consumption. The good fuel consumption is aided by the new Bruntons Auto Prop which alters its pitch to save fuel and optimize power depending on the power applied (the best for blue water cruising). A large set of spares is carried including: starter motor, alternator, raw water pump, full gasket set, injectors, all the filters required for many more full services and much more. The spare’s set is unused apart from regular service parts."

SAILING:

  • Genoas:
    • Two Genoas (165% and 135%) are set on new furlers in a Solent configuration
    • Just select the size genoa and amount required for the wind. Being able to select from two Genoa sizes means you don’t end up with baggy furled sails that don’t set well. You can have the correct sail shape in all wind conditions.
    • Furl out both genoas for twin pole downwind sailing, the safest and most controllable way for fast downwind sailing in light to heavy weather
    • Staysail stay is removable and stows at mast to allow for easy short tacking with the no. 2 genoa

  • New Staysail
    • Designed to enable performance and safety in heavier weather
    • Reefable to become storm Gyb
    • Set on removable stay stowed at mast for easy deployment and setting. Removable to allow easy short tacking with no. 2 genoa
    • Optional (currently unused) self-tacking track for staysail
    • Good condition
  • Mainsail
    • In mast furling mainsail
    • Vertical batons

SPARES:

There is a huge spares kit covering all the major systems which would enable the next owner to immediately set sail for extended blue water cruising. It covers rigging, deck gear, engines, electrical, plumbing, sails, power, water generation, windlass, winches etc. The spares kit (whilst extensive) has also been carefully thought through e.g. every pump on the boat (water, generator, fuel, engine, bilge etc.) has a twinned new spare as well as service kits so you can instantly change the faulty out and then service it at leisure.
