Ovni yachts, built by Alubat in France, are perhaps one of the most widely known and internationally recognized cruising yachts in the world. There are few yachts as admired and displaying as many qualities in each of their models as an Ovni. From France to Australia, the USA or South Africa, almost anyone, even without much knowledge of yacht builders, will know Ovni, and for those who don't, one look at them is enough to plainly see that this is a yacht far above the rest. These boats have been designed with the ocean in mind, and intended for long distance cruising. All the Ovni owners we have met in 10 years of working with cruising sailors have said that if they ever purchased another boat, it would have to be an Ovni again.

Their first attribute is their strength. As Alubat's moto clearly demonstrate 'In the middle of the ocean, the real luxury, is safety'

All Ovni boats are built from 5083 H 111 aluminum (hulls, decks, roofs and cockpits )and are fully assembled and welded in an Argon / Helium atmosphere. They are welded inside and out for extra security. Interior woodwork is in oak, with white vinyl headlining. Lead ballast is encapsulated in resin.

This 2 cabin 395 is fully insulated above the waterline and has many unique design features, as well as substantial improvements both inside and out.

"Galatea" has a lifting keel which gives her an enviable minimum draft of 58cm with the keel up and an impressive draft of 1.92 with the keel down. The most popular Ovnis for cruisers are the lifting keel version, as the boat is then immensely manageable around atolls and reefs, and can easily be beached for cleaning. With its 58cm minimum draft, you can go virtually anywhere.

The smooth and accurate helm control will say a lot for its nautical qualities: remaining both stiff in a breeze and efficient in performance. It is a Philippe Briand design after all!

With her generous forms and the quality of the installed amenities aboard, this boat will offer you exceptional comfort on board, both at sea and at anchor. The cabins are large, and the main cabin is spacious with enough space around the table to facilitate circulation. Interior wood is light oak, which contributes to a bright, modern feel without losing the traditional feel of a skilfully built yacht, where curved angles, joinery, cabinetry and attention to details are immediately obvious and far above what is often built these days.

This beautiful Ovni 395 ‘Galatea’ was ordered from the Alubat factory for her Swiss owner, a semi-retired surgeon who chose this boat specifically for his plans to sail around the world to some of the most isolated and challenging locations.

The boat was launched in 2005 at the Sables D’Olonne in France, where the owner spent the first two years between having to return home to work further preparing the boat for offshore voyages.  

He and his wife, a qualified shipwright who specialises in aluminium vessels left for Spain and North Africa in 2007, exploring Morocco and Gibraltar before heading across the Atlantic  in 2008 to the French Caribbean and Granada where they spent where they were berthed for two years by a another Swiss friend who had a permanent berth at the Phare Bleu Marina. During this time, the boat was taken out of the water for several month each year, and in 2010 received a full strip of the hull to bare aluminium before being re-primed and antifouled, effectively making her bottom brand new again.

The owner also added at this time a new Echotech 240 DML Watermaker to make the boat more comfortable for long distance and isolated cruising.

They then sailed around the Caribbean and onto Cuba and Guatemala for the following year, again taking the boat out of the water for the several months of the hurricane season to return to work in Europe. When the boat was lifted out of the water at the Ram Marina in Guatemala, a crane scratched the starboard hull and left an ugly mark, although superficial and not affecting the boat in any way than cosmetic, but which greatly distressed the owners who are absolutely pedantic when it comes to taking care of their yacht.

Back from Europe for their Panama crossing in 2014 they purchased new chain and a new anchor before sailing south to Colombia and Ecuador.

In Salinas they once again spent considerable time and expenses preparing the boat for the Pacific crossing and the long leg to the Galapagos and Marquesas, adding a new autopilot, water pumps and renovating the hydraulics with a new cylinder added amongst a hundred other small things. 

They arrived in the Marquesas in July 2016 and spent three years in French Polynesia, once again taking the boat out of the water each year for the cyclone season and to return to work.  Before leaving for Tonga and Fiji in 2019, they replaced all the batteries and the rudder bearing and the hydraulic pump for the rudder.

Having become grand parents recently and with a growing family, the owners are now very intent on selling their lovely Galatea as soon as possible to purchase a larger Ovni or similar aluminium boat with variable depth such as Garcia.

Over their 14 years ownership and the 24 000 miles they have cruised on this lovely vessel, they have not once had a reason to regret their choice of vessel or doubt her sea-keeping qualities. Was it not because they enjoy having their family visit and need more room, they would gladly continue to call Galatea home for another 24,000 miles without needing much at all to keep her going forever.

Galatea is presented in beautiful condition and will appeal to a discerning Ovni buyer. Other than a little bit of flaking paint where the aluminium was painted (very normal to all aluminium boats) there is nothing to worry about. Everything works and has been recently tested by an independent surveyor registered with IMS in the UK who visited Fiji last week (September 1stto the 6th) to inspect several other cruising yachts and which visit was perfect for the owners of Galatea to give her a full bill of health before putting her on the market. The survey report included a full out of water inspection and rig and mechanical check. The report is available on request.
