  • How to read tides (heights and streams) and what they mean to your vessel
  • Weather theory, forecasts and understand the Beaufort Wind Scale
  • You will learn about Rules of the Road (IRPCS)
  • What the lights, shapes, buoys and flags mean on the water
  • Electronic charts and tools
  • Passage planning
  • Pilotage
  • What Emergency services are available and how to contact them if needed
  • The use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts
  • An understanding of Knots and Rope work
  • Maintenance and gear failure as well as the construction and parts of a yacht
  • Log keeping
  • Navigating in restricted visibility
  • Points of Sailing and simple Sailing Theory
  • Anchoring, docking and mooring

 

What will I have?

A DAY SKIPPER (Theory) Certificate that is internationally recognized. A Day Skipper Certificate will enable you to charter a yacht anywhere in the world. Remember you will also need to complete the Day Skipper practical course. We will commence offering the practical course early in the New Year.

This course is ideal for any one contemplating a bareboat charter holiday or considering buying a boat. It is comprehensive and covers the theory side of the practical sailing courses. It is a minimum of 40 hours in a classroom.

By the end of the course you will feel confident to plan a passage for a day sail, using your weather knowledge and navigation techniques. You will find this course invaluable if you want to learn how to safely navigate a coastline and make decisions onboard. The immense feeling of satisfaction and confidence from this knowledge will help you obtain the most from your yacht.
