Basic Diesel Mechanics

basic diesel mechanics

Private lessons to be booked 15 days in advance. In case of adverse weather a new date will be set as close as possible to the original date.

No boat owner can feel completely safe without knowing a little bit about their engine.

Diesel engines look complicated, but in fact they are fairly simple to understand and look after once you have been taught a few things abut them. It’s amazing how much more you will understand and how much happier you will feel after our Diesel Mechanic course. This course will show you how to perform a basic service, understand smoke signals, understand each part of the engine, as well as basic troubleshooting and small underway repair.

You can plan this course as part of your diesel engine service plan, so that we can service your engine while doing the course, the best way to teach you how to do it yourself.

The course is offered in 2 lessons of 2 hours each ($595 for the lot).

Your teacher will provide you with the tools and pump but you are in charge of purchasing the oil (we can help you make sure you buy the right viscosity), filters, gaskets, and other disposable parts for your engine. (We can help with getting the right ones for you prior to your lessons).

As with all Nautilus Yachting School lessons you are welcome to bring friend and family to share the price, just be aware that for diesel mechanic the space is often rather tight and not everyone will be able to get a clear view of what is going on in the engine room. (Maximum 4 people)

Your teacher will provide you notes and recommendations especially designed for you and your engine.

  • Understanding your engine
  • Different parts and blocks of your engine
  • Your cooling system and how to maintain it
  • The gearbox and drive system
  • Checking oil in main block and gear box
  • Changing oil and filters
  • Priming and bleeding fuel lines
  • Changing and checking belt
  • Understanding the marine electrics, battery boards, alternator etc.
  • What tools to keep on board
  • Troubleshooting
  • …and more

Workshops are all conducted on the water.

Each student is encouraged to practice each new skill over and over so as to quickly build confidence while safely supervised by our instructor.

All lessons will include additional notes and reading materials as well as written personalised advice.
