SULIS A word from the Owners
"We first saw an Elan 434 Impression when Anna at Nautilus was selling one in 2020, and we were instantly impressed. For our family cruising boat we were looking for a tried and tested monohull. Our checklist was for a balance of blue water passage capability, sailing performance, build quality, safety and comfortable family living whilst on anchor. After extensive research and reading numerous reviews on the Elan we were sold!
Our cruising life started however in April 2023 in Martinique on a French production boat. But we had not given up our dream of sailing back home to New Zealand on an Elan.
It was in St Martin in the Caribbean in Feb 2024 when an Elan 434 flying a NZ flag came and anchored in front of us on Colette, the Skippers birthday. We went over to say Hi and discovered that this this kiwi family were going to sell their boat due to work commitments. So out of the blue we had found our Elan, or rather Sulis found us! I still joke that it was an expensive birthday present, but the best one ever.
The boat was first launched in July 2006 having been commissioned with a customed v-berth forward cabin, combining a larger bed and more storage. The boat was only used for a few months each European summer.
In 2013 the boat was sold to an Australian couple who kept her in Greece, only using her for a couple of months each year then storing her on the hard with a full canvas boat cover for UV protection. Our now good friends from NZ purchased her in 2023 and did extensive upgrades to prepare her to sail her from Greece to New Zealand.
We became the fourth owners and took her over in April 2024 and have completed the journey.
We took Sulis out for our very first sail as her new owners from Martinique to Aruba, in 2m seas and up to 30kts wind for 4 days, and were very impressed with her drive and sea kindly motion. Since then we have sailed to Colombia, Panama, through the canal to the Pacific Ocean. The big crossing from Panama to the Marquesas was so enjoyable on a boat this well designed and set up for long distance passage making. We then sailed through French Polynesia, Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, and now back to Fiji. Sulis has never let us down and has kept us safe in all weathers and sea conditions.
We have been really happy with our decision to change boats and Sulis has more than met our expectations. She has a high comfort rating of 28.77, which under passage shows up as her moving with drive and ease through the water. She is sure footed and fast, and as a family we have always felt safe and secure going to sea in her.
She is light and comfortable down-below, has ample space and headroom, and has provided us with a lovely home. The cockpit provides an excellent outdoor living space in the tropics, with the sugar scoop and swim platform giving easy access to the sea and dinghy.
The continual upgrades of the last 3 years makes it even harder for us to let her go. But it is time to go back to land and school for our daughter after 3.5 years of liveaboard cruising. As sad as we are to sell her, we are happy in the knowledge that she is truly an exceptional boat, set up to go anywhere and I’am sure she will look after her new owners well."
